Although there are potential variations with each type, ponds typically are connected to the watershed and/ or ground water, which supplies the significant amount of fresh water needed to maintain a healthy balance. In contrast, a natural swimming pool is a "closed" system that utilizes a circulation pump, debris filter, plantings, and a supplied water source in order to maintain a balance. Pools can be installed in just about any size yard. Typically, the smaller the pool the more bio-mechanical filtration is required. Again, because of its connection to the natural environment, each project has specific design criteria that make it unique. Whether you are living in an urban area or if you own several acres, the conditions of your site will help determine the appropriate design.

Design variations can range from a conventional looking pool, in which the plant-filter area is completely separated from the swimming area, to a wild landscape that appears to have occurred naturally.
